Baroque Music Workshop

The Salt Spring Island 3-day Baroque Music Workshop is for singers (SATB) and instrumentalists who are interested in learning about historically informed performance practice. All students, amateurs, semi-professional and professional musicians who sing or play at an accomplished level are welcome. The workshop will provide a casual, friendly, and supportive atmosphere in which participants can learn about baroque style. Modern instruments A=440 will be used.  Workshop instructors will be Marco Vitale (direction and choir), Paul Luchkow (strings), and Rome Ciuffa (winds).

Instruments
Modern instruments pitched at A=440 Hz will be used. This will allow for more local participation. The following instruments will be considered:
Violin, Viola, Cello. Double Bass, Oboe, Flute, Bassoon, Recorder, Trumpet, Harpsichord (harpsichord players should be familiar with figured bass notation, the harpsichord will be provided).

Musical Ability
Singers must be able to read music​.
Singers will preferably have training and some experience singing in small choirs.
Singers must be able to sing in tune and project their voices.
Instrumentalists should preferably have experience playing in small orchestras or chamber groups at an accomplished level.

Tuition:  $180 CAN.  If the workshop is cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions, tuition will be fully refunded.

Note: there is no cell phone reception at the hall. Wi-fi is limited to Shaw subscribers via Shaw Open.

Transportation
Off-island participants are responsible for arranging and paying for their own transportation.
A car is necessary. Some car-pooling with local participants may be available.

Accommodation
Off-island participants are responsible for arranging their own accommodation for the duration of the workshop​. There are many airbnb’s on Salt Spring and there is a campground at Ruckle Provincial Park, which is not far from Beaver Point Hall.
For those in financial need, a small amount of billeted accommodation may be available, please contact us to discuss.

Food
Lunch will be provided.
Snacks and refreshments will be provided mid-morning and mid-afternoon during the workshop.
Participants are responsible for their own dinners.
